Psychologist, Brisbane Minds Approved Provider

A qualified Early Childhood Teacher, and registered Psychologist, Heather has been providing psychological support to a wide range of clients for over 10 years. Heather has a broad range of experience including delivering psychiatric outpatient group programs, delivering offender rehabilitation within correctional centres, and providing individual and family support in community settings including working with homeless clients in the UK and rural/remote farming and indigenous communities in her work with the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Far North Queensland.   Whilst working with Corrective Services she played a key role in developing interventions tailored to more effectively meet the needs of Indigenous offenders.
Approach to Therapy:

Heather’s approach has been described as warm, welcoming and down to earth, supporting clients to rapidly feel at ease. Her aim is to form a strong therapeutic partnership and achieve outcomes as directed by the client.  She tailors her approach dependent on client need and draws from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy and attachment based parenting approaches.  She is accredited to deliver of Circle of Security Parenting and 123 Magic Parenting.

Heather has a special interest in supporting parents in all aspects of parenting; from nurturing parent/child bond to managing difficult behaviours.  Heather’s experience includes supporting new parents, assisting LGBTIQ clients with gender diverse parenting, riding the IVF roller coaster, responding to a developing child’s changing needs, parenting the gender variant child, parenting following separation and re-partnering, coping with the loss of a child.

In addition, Heather is skilled at assisting both straight and LGBTIQ clients with issues relating to sexuality including gender identity questions, issues with intimacy, and sexual trauma.

Main Areas of Interest:

Heather’s experience working with Indigenous offenders and also with Indigenous clients in Cape York (Northern Peninsula area) afforded her a strong appreciation of the uniqueness of Australian Indigenous peoples, and the challenges this can create in the therapeutic context where a clinician is ‘culture blind’. Whilst it is her belief that services to Indigenous peoples are best delivered by Indigenous peoples, Heather feels fortunate in having been afforded the opportunity to experience Indigenous community life first hand, and to have developed an appreciation of ways of working with Indigenous clients that are respectful, collaborative and in the spirit of reconciliation.

In her current work in private practice, Heather works with adolescents, adults, older adults, and LGBTIQ clients experiencing a variety of issues including depression, anxiety/panic, stress, grief and loss, trauma and relationship issues.
