Nicole completed six years of study in 2013, finishing with her postgraduate degree in health psychology at the University of Queensland. Nicole has since worked in private practice and in an inpatient setting at various hospitals. Nicole also recently published her postgraduate research on group interventions in the prevention of eating disorders.
Nicole enjoys working with adults and older adults across a range of mental health and physical health issues. Nicole is interested in tailoring her treatment to suit the individual needs of her clients; thereby using a client-centred approach. Nicole has experience with the following evidence-based treatment frameworks: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
Nicole has specialised knowledge and experience in the area of health psychology including chronic pain management, chronic disease management, drug and alcohol addiction, weight management, health related anxiety ie. somatic symptom disorder, and grief and loss issues. Nicole has also gained experience working with mental health concerns such as depression and anxiety.
Chronic pain management
Chronic pain is strongly associated with mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Nicole is particularly passionate about working with individuals who suffer from chronic pain. From the experience she has had within this field, Nicole understands the widespread impact of chronic pain on individuals’ lives; including relationships, change in roles, and limited capacity to work. Nicole has worked with a number of different conditions associated with chronic pain such as injury, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis. Nicole helps her clients to understand the psychological impact of pain, and works collaboratively to assist individuals in achieving an optimal quality of life through learning to live with their pain. Nicole uses techniques from the frameworks of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, while adopting a biopsychosocial model of treatment.
Chronic disease management
Nicole also has a particular interest in chronic disease management. Nicole has worked with a range of chronic diseases and illnesses including respiratory conditions ie. Cystic Fibrosis, type 2 diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis and heart disease. Nicole has also worked with psychological adjustment to acute conditions such as stroke and motor vehicle accidents. Nicole understands the debilitating impact of chronic disease on an individuals’ mental health and overall quality of life. Nicole works with clients to increase their adjustment to illness, and uses techniques from Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to assist clients in adapting their thoughts, and managing the emotions associated with their illness.
Drug and alcohol addiction
Nicole enjoys working with individuals who require assistance in managing their alcohol or drug use. Nicole has experience with assisting individuals who are currently using alcohol or other drugs, and in preventing relapse for those who have achieved cessation. Nicole works with individuals to firstly help them understand the cycle of addiction and collaboratively set treatment goals. Nicole primarily uses a Motivational Interviewing framework to assist clients with achieving their treatment goals.
Anxiety is a very common condition amongst the general population. Anxiety has many different forms, though can include worrying about health such as the likelihood of becoming ill, or of a loved one becoming ill. Nicole works with individuals who experience health anxiety to help them understand and manage their anxiety using techniques from Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Additionally, high levels of stress or other emotions can sometimes increase the symptoms of an existing health condition. Nicole works with these individuals to help understand the impact of psychological health on physical health, and manage the underlying emotions in order to improve individuals’ physical health.
Grief and loss
Each individual copes with grief and loss in their own way. Nicole works with individuals suffering from grief and loss issues to empathise with the individuals’ unique experience and support them through the various stages of grief. Nicole also assists individuals to identify and manage their emotions using various relaxation techniques. Most importantly, Nicole allows individuals to process their emotions in a supportive environment.
