Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI)
What is itCounselling for Gender and Sexual Minorities is counseling provided by clinicians that have experience and familiarity with the challenges members of the gender and sexually diverse community often face. Although a person’s sexual or romantic orientation or gender identity may not be a source of distress, people who are questioning or identify as gender and sexual minorities may find that the exclusion of their experience in a heterosexist setting, and/or social stigma of living as a minority is a source of stress or anxiety. Of course, in addition to issues associated with one’s sexual, romantic, or gender identity, GSM clients also experience the day to day struggles of life, for which finding a suitably experienced clinician can be of benefit.
What it includesCounselling to clients who are questioning or who identify as gender and/or sexually diverse includes approaches that are affirming of the client’s orientation – regardless of whether assistance is sought for matters relating directly to sexual, romantic or gender identity struggles.
What we doWe strive to provide a service that is accessible and responsive to the unique challenges GSM clients’ experience. Whilst many clinicians may be qualified to help, we respect that clients feel more comfortable with a GSM clinician, or at least with one who specializes in or has a great deal of experience with the issues gender and sexually diverse clients face. We are able to offer both. Some of the issues we can assist with include but are not limited to:
- Identity questioning, transitioning;
- Coming out, being outed, acceptance and discrimination
- Relationships issues including domestic violence, parenting, sexual and intimacy issues;
- Mental health such as anxiety, depression, stress, trauma
