Drug Dependence  

What is it

A drug is a substance, other than food, which is taken to change the way the body and/or mind functions. Whilst some people use drugs (both licit and illicit) safely and responsibly, there can be the risk of drug use being harmful.
Harmful drug use is use of a substance leading to impairment and/or distress across social, interpersonal, legal, health or vocational areas of the person’s life.

At KCPsych a holistic approach is taken to treatment which focuses on harm minimisation and reduction which encompasses the whole person. We believe that acknowledging the individuals unique set of social, cultural and environmental risk and protective factors, can assist in achieving the best outcomes for our clients.

How a psychologist can help

If you feel that you need support in addressing your drug use, a Psychologist can provide a supportive & non-judgemental environment where you can explore the contributing factors which have resulted in your drug use causing harm.  A Psychologist can assist with helping you identify you strengths and achievements in being able to move forward with an individualised plan. Psychologists work within a range of therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy, to assist with achieving the person reach their treatment goal.
